Chris Bray, a brief biography
Chris has been a Liberal and then Liberal Democrat all his adult life, coming to Devon when he was 24 years old. He has lived in Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and Newton Abbot, as well as two periods in Teignmouth. During his first time in the town he became the youngest Town Councillor up to that date.
He was a teacher for nearly forty years, teaching for a number of years at the old Brook Hill school (now the site of the large Co-op) and at the newly opened Hazeldown. Subsequently, many years later, his wife, Pat Bray, became headteacher there. Chris finished his full time teaching career as headteacher at Abbotskerswell Primary, near Newton Abbot. For a number of years after, he did supply work at several local schools, including Shaldon and Hazeldown.
Chris has always been interested in politics, cutting his teeth on the anti-Vietnam war campaign in the late 60’s. Amongst his other interests are reading, travel and the study of religion, particularly Buddhism and Christianity. Chris is also a very enthusiastic, if not particularly adept, practioner of yoga, which he maintains helps him in his daily life as a councillor.
Chris was first elected as County Councillor for Teignmouth in 2005 and was immediately given a senior role in the Overview and Scrutiny system. In May 2007 he became a member of the Executive team on Devon County Council, as Executive Support Member for Overview and Scrutiny, a job, he says, that requires all the diplomatic and calming skills that he can muster!
